9 Instagram Post Design Tips That Actually Grow Small Brands
By Muhammad Abdullah · July 1, 2026

Instagram doesn't reward the prettiest post — it rewards the post that gets people to stop, save, and share. These 9 tips are what I apply to every social graphic I design for small brands.
The 9 tips
- Pick one brand color and use it on every single post. Consistency in the feed builds recognition.
- Use two fonts max — one for headlines, one for body. More than that looks amateur.
- Design for the thumb first. Most people scroll on their phone, holding it one-handed.
- Put the hook in the first 3 words of the first slide. If it doesn't stop the scroll, nothing else matters.
- Use carousels for anything worth saving. Instagram rewards saves and shares more than likes.
- Leave breathing room. Beginners cram every post. Space is what makes a design feel premium.
- Match the caption to the design. If the post is loud, the caption should be short and punchy.
- Design in a template system. You should be able to make 30 posts in a day, not 1.
- Post at consistent times. The algorithm rewards accounts it can predict.
The one mistake
The mistake that kills every small brand's feed is inconsistency. Different fonts, different colors, different layouts every week. Pick a system and stick to it for 90 days before you change anything.
If you want a done-for-you feed that looks consistent and converts, that's exactly what my social media post design service delivers — a full template system plus a month of ready-to-post graphics.
